Hundreds of sheep lose a ton of wool in stock show competition

Thirty-two people sheared about 2,250 pounds of wool from nearly 300 sheep in four hours Sunday.

Welcome to sheep shearing at the Black Hills Stock Show. The competition is four years old now, and Curtis Olson, whose idea it was to start the competition, said it's going strong.

"It's like coming to a family reunion. A lot of these guys I taught how to shear," said Olson, who lives in Broadus, Mont., teaches sheep shearing at South Dakota State University and sheared sheep commercially for 30 years. "I see people in the crowd that I sheared for - hello, how are you, and I have the camaraderie."

This was the first year, however, that the Black Hills Stock Show hosted the National Sheep Shearing Championships.

More than 300 people watched as groups of shearers competed throughout the afternoon for best time and cleanest cuts.
