Every time I drive the 16 miles from our ranch in my hometown in northern Idaho, I spent the dogs that are chained to a tree, or simply a niche for a stake in the ground.

Make no mistake: These are not animals love, responsible owners who want to make sure they are secure when unattended, so they fix them temporarily. These dogs are imprisoned within the chain throughout their lives.
