Cards re-open their Hall of Fame — virtually

TOWER GROVE • Several years ago while I was working on a book, Brian Finch , one of the overseers of the Cardinals' Hall of Fame and soon to be a TV star with his turn on MLB Network's "Baseball IQ," gave me a guided tour of the Hall's collection, which was then housed at the Bowling Hall of Fame in downtown St. Louis.

He also gave me a pop quiz.

"Can you tell me what doesn't fit on this ball?" Finch asked.

He pointed into one of the cases to a baseball signed by the 1926 Cardinals, the team that won the franchise's first World Series title. The ball was tilted in such a way to show Rogers Hornsby's autograph, which was located just off the sweet spot. Why? Well, the sweet spot had been usurped by a familiar, loopy signature that had never belonged to a member of the Cardinals. It was Babe Ruth's autograph. He is the only non-Cardinal to have signed the ball, and why he signed it at all is unclear. He was the final out of the seven-game Series, having been caught trying to steal second base in the bottom of the ninth inning. Finch explained that the story goes that a baseball was being passed around the clubhouse or the field for Cardinals to sign, and Ruth -- by then deep into his stardom as baseball's most recognizable face and name -- had just gotten in the habit of signing any ball that came near him.

It may make shows like this one against the worst teams in the league, but also the best teams in the league (as Philadelphia used to be). What we have seen with the player this year is a reluctance to attack the strike zone. The guy did not live up to contact. He is the anti-Hall bill.Watching him pitch is similar to the average person to golf or bowling. The focus must be big-time, are accurate, and if you saw a little, you mentally psyche....
